Distribution of Certified Seed Kits : A Resounding Success
From July 14 to 20, 2024, the ISSD Sahel project was successfully carried out the distribution of certified seed kits across multiple localities in Mali. This initiative reached areas including Bougouni, Sikasso, San, Ségou, Molodo, Dacoumani, Monzombléna, Koloniboundio, Didiéni, Guéssebougou, and Samanko. This program is designed to enhance the quality of seeds available to 4,476 farmers thereby strengthening food security and improving the incomes of rural households.
During this distribution, over 24 tons of climate adapted varieties seeds with high yield were provided with the following breakdown:
- Maize: 13,418 kg
- Rice: 6,200 kg
- Millet: 2,929 kg
- Sorghum: 1,159 kg
- Groundnut: 402 kg
- Cowpea: 208 kg
The distribution process was overseen by The Regional Directors of Agriculture (DRA) who personally handed over the seed kits to the producers. This year, the program introduced an innovative approach by inviting certified producers to give one-third of their production to other producers. This initiative aims to ensure a broader availability of high-quality seeds and foster a spirit of mutual support among farmers. The target producers, grateful for this donation during the crucial rainy season and amid the country's crisis, admit that these seeds are vital for offsetting the deficit caused by the irregular rains of the previous season. They expressed their determination to use the seeds optimally to maximize yields.
The mission was carried in close communication with local farmer organizations involved in community-level seed multiplication. These organizations are essential in providing basic seeds to community producers and training them in the best production and seed management practices. By strengthening the capacities of local producers, SAA and its partners contribute to creating a sustainable and inclusive seed sector.
In total, approximately 4 476 farmers received the seed kits. The project plans to continue this initiative by increasing the number of beneficiaries and diversifying the types of seeds distributed while regularly evaluating the program's impact to make necessary improvements.
In summary, the wide distribution of certified seed kits represents significant progress for food security and sustainable agricultural development in the targeted regions, promising to continue positively transforming the agricultural landscape of the Sahel.
