Improving Pesticide Management and Use in Ethiopia: A Key to Boosting Agricultural Productivity

Proper management, handling, and use of pesticides are critical to increase agricultural productivity. As the demand for pesticides grows rapidly alongside agricultural expansion, gaps and challenges in their registration, monitoring and control, handling, and use pose a significant risks to human and animal health, and contribute to environmental contamination. 

In this context, the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), in collaboration with the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA), organized a national consultation forum on December 26, 2024, to raise awareness about pesticide management and use of while identifying sustainable solutions for the sector.

H.E. Dr. Meles Mekonnen, State Minister at the MoA, emphasized the importance of plant protection in enhancing agricultural productivity and quality. He underscored the necessity of integrated pest management (IPM) and highlighted the growing demand for pesticides. Dr. Meles stressed that the proper handling and management of pesticides including their transportation, storage, distribution, use and disposal must prioritize the health of humans and animals.  He further noted that the forum serves as a platform to promote the registration of low-toxicity chemicals, the establishment of a biological pest control system and a conducive environment for safe pesticide management and use.

Mr. Melese Liyhe, Coordinator for Regenerative Agriculture at SAA-Ethiopia, highlighted the risks associated with improper pesticide use, which can significantly harm both human health and the environment. He advocated for caution in pesticide application and encouraged the adoption of biological control methods and other sustainable pest management practices to mitigate these risks.

This consultation form represents a step forward in fostering collaboration among stakeholders to ensure the responsible use of pesticides while exploring alternative pest control strategies that support sustainable agricultural development.
