In July 2024, the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) underscored its pivotal role in transforming Uganda's agricultural landscape during a series of site visits. Central to these visits was Mr. Yohei Sasakawa, Chairperson of The Nippon Foundation (TNF), SAA’s core donor. Accompanied by Dr. Amit Roy, Chair of SAA’s Board, the delegation highlighted the profound impact of SAA’s programs on agricultural development, youth empowerment, and economic growth in Uganda. The visit was a testament to the commitment of SAA and The Nippon Foundation to fostering sustainable agricultural progress and exploring new opportunities for collaboration.

◆ Meeting with the President and State Minister
During the visit, Mr. Yohei Sasakawa and SAA representatives met with Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni and State Minister for Agriculture, Hon. Bright Rwamirama. The meeting was a pivotal moment, reflecting the high-level commitment to enhancing Uganda’s agricultural sector. President Museveni acknowledged SAA’s significant contributions to Uganda’s agricultural transformation. Reflecting on the past, President Museveni recalled Mr. Sasakawa’s visit to Uganda in 2001 with former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. In his Twitter post, President Museveni shared, “Yesterday, I met Mr. Yohei Sasakawa, the Chairman of Nippon Foundation. We discussed impactful initiatives focusing on smallholder farmers in Uganda. These initiatives have the potential to benefit over 500,000 farmers, create jobs for youth, and significantly boost agricultural output. The government will fully support these initiatives.”

Hon. Bright Rwamirama highlighted the importance of continued partnership and support. “The role of SAA in modernizing our agricultural practices and supporting farmers is crucial. We are grateful for the support and look forward to expanding these efforts to benefit more communities across Uganda,” he stated.

◆ A Vision for Agricultural Innovation   
Mr. Sasakawa shared his reflections on the importance of self-sufficient agricultural practices amidst global food security challenges. During his visit to Uganda, he observed and admired the advanced agricultural techniques implemented by SAA.

He emphasized, “The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has emphasized the need for countries to adopt self-sufficient agricultural practices to ensure food security. SAA’s deep involvement with farmers and the modern techniques employed here in Uganda are remarkable and represent significant progress.”

He praised the “never give up” mentality that drives SAA’s work and expressed his commitment to continuing support for Ugandan farmers. “The results achieved so far are highly satisfactory. We are optimistic about Uganda’s potential to enhance food production and move towards greater self-reliance,” he added.

◆ Transforming Agriculture into a Thriving Business
Dr. Roy, discussed the evolution of agriculture in Uganda from subsistence to a robust business model. He highlighted the expanded market for Ugandan agricultural products and the role of technology in driving productivity. He noted, “Agriculture in Uganda has transitioned from merely feeding families to becoming a thriving business. The African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) has played a significant role in facilitating trade and expanding markets.”

He emphasized the importance of transforming potential into tangible economic benefits, citing SAA’s initiatives in the Karamoja region as a prime example. “By introducing wheat production in response to global supply challenges, we are not only addressing import dependency but also providing economic benefits to local farmers,” Dr. Amit stated.

He also highlighted the role of information technology in modernizing agricultural practices. “The advent of smartphones has allowed producers to connect directly with consumers, eliminating middlemen and improving market efficiency,” he explained.

◆ Commitment to Agricultural Investment in Uganda
H.E. Sasayama Takuya, the Japanese Ambassador to Uganda, highlighted Japan’s focus on agricultural investment he remarked, “Japan is committed to supporting Uganda’s agricultural sector. Investments from Japanese fertilizing companies are expected to bring significant benefits and improvements to the sector.”

He also expressed hope that enhanced productivity in Uganda would contribute to global food security. “By improving agricultural productivity in Uganda, we aim to address global food security issues that concern both Uganda and the international community,”

◆ Showcasing Agricultural Development and Youth Empowerment
The delegation, joined by SAA staff, visited the Zirobwe Agaliawamu Agri-Business Training Association (ZAABTA), the delegation observed the impactful role of SAA's One Stop Centre Association (OSCA) model Initiative in empowering local farmers through advanced training, infrastructure, and valuable agribusiness services.

The visit to the FARMACY a youth led enterprise revealed how SAA's support has transformed this horticultural enterprise into a hub for sustainable agriculture and youth empowerment. Mr. Tumukunde stated, “The use of biochar has significantly lowered our costs, offering a cost-effective alternative to peat moss. SAA’s support has also provided valuable training and market linkages, empowering youth to maximize productivity.”

The success stories continued with Mr. Kiseka Edward, whose transition from boda boda rider to a successful farmer was made possible through SAA's training and support, and the vibrant activities of the Zirobwe Kalagala Youth Multipurpose Cooperative (ZIKA), which has empowered youth with skills and resources to thrive in agribusiness.

◆ Empowering Youth to Transform Agriculture through Innovation and Modernization
Mr. Anyang Robert, SAA Uganda Country Director, believes youth can revolutionize agriculture and create jobs. He urged young people to see farming as a dynamic and profitable career, and explore service opportunities like: Mechanization services, Digital tool applications and Advisory services. By doing so, youth can modernize traditional farming methods, ensuring sustainability and productivity for future generations.

◆ Agriculture’s Role in National Development
Ms. Connie Acayo, Commissioner at the Ministry of Agriculture, emphasized the alignment of SAA’s initiatives with the National Development Plan (NDP). She highlighted the collaborative efforts between SAA and local governments in implementing agricultural activities.

Ms. Acayo stated, “Sasakawa Africa Association’s approach to empowering stakeholders and integrating agricultural activities with local government structures is commendable. Their efforts align well with the NDP and are crucial for the sector’s development.”

She also highlighted the success of SAA’s one-stop centers and the need to continue expanding these initiatives. “Establishing and scaling up one-stop centers is essential for efficient agricultural management and maximizing the impact of SAA’s work,” she concluded.

The visit highlighted the significant advancements led by SAA and its core donor, TNF. From the promotion of modern farming techniques to the empowerment of youth, SAA’s initiatives are driving positive change, reinforcing their commitment to transforming Uganda’s agriculture and paving the way for a self-sufficient, thriving sector.
